About the Salary Data

Sources of Data

The source of the salary data on this site is from one of the major media baseball sites, however, unfortunately I do not remember which one. The salary data for major league baseball players has been available since 1985 when the maximum salary was hardly more than the current major league average salary. This might have gone a long way towards helping to spike the salaries of the players over time.

Though I have salary data for most major leaguers since 1985, you will still notice some holes for players who may have been called up from the minors during a particular season. Usually, the salary for this player will be the minimum or close to it. All league averages for salaries are based on known data and though the missing players may bring down the average a little bit, we are still comparing apples to apples from season to season as this is an issue that exists for every season.

Centiles

Centiles are a way for you to see how a player's salaries has fared relative to the rest of the league over time. A centile rating of 1 means that a player is in the top 1% of salaries in the league. Player are ranked from 1 to x in a list and then grouped into 100 categories based on that rank. A player's centile refers to the # of that ranking category. The last centile is 80 instead of 100 because there are so many players that earn the minimum or close to it that its unfair to rank one minimum salary guy higher than another. Anyone who isn't in the top 80% automatically earns an 80 centile.

As stated above, the league average is based on known salaries only.

Minor League Salaries

Minor league salaries are not listed because (1), the information is not readily available for publication and (2), the data would be meaningless as it would not vary too much and most likely not be of any analytical value.
