About the Draft Data

Overview

One of the biggest accomplishments of The Baseball Cube was to publish the complete draft history for major league baseball since the beginning of the amateur draft in 1965. Every year, phase and round has been included with some special additional features to enhance the experience including a player search tool, links to player profile pages and career information for players regarding their highest level reached and mlb experience.

The following section deals with some components of the draft pages that can help clarify the data and answer any common questions that are directed towards this section.

Bragging Friends?

I get a lot of emails from people who say their friends tell them that they were drafted by a major league team and that they didn't make it for one reason or another and now I have the ability to validate these claims.

If someone tells you they were drafted and you have some question, just use the Draft Search section of the site and do a search on part of their name. If they don't show up, it might be a good idea to consider another name they might have used during this time of their life. For example, Bob instead of Robert or Dick instead of Richard etc. If you do find the player, and his name is linked, you can find out even more information about this player. If not, then he was still drafted but we do not have any statistics for him.

But if you do not find your friend, then there is a good chance that he is pulling your leg. I have the complete draft history so if your friend doesn't show up, he is not telling the whole truth. It is possible though that he was signed as a free agent or acquired by some other means but not through the draft.

Highest Level Reached

You'll notice that a lot of players will have blank values for their highest level reached and the reason for this is that I just do not have any information on this player. The newer players are pretty well covered but as we go back in time, I have less information on the drafted players and it starts to become only major leaguers who have their highest level listed. You can safely assume that if a player has a blank value that it is definitely because I do not have his information. If you can help us with any information for a player, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Players listed more than once

When a player is drafted in the major league draft, he does not necessarily sign with his drafting team and so just because you see that John Elway was drafted (twice actually), it doesn't mean he signed. (He didn't) All that it means is that he was selected. If a player did not sign, he was free to enter the draft for the next year and it was very often that a player was selected more than once. Unfortunately, I do not have information on whether a player was signed by the team that drafted him. There is no clear cut formula to derive this information except that if you see a player's name more than once (and you're sure its the same player), then you can assume that any draft instance that wasn't his last was one where he was not signed. But for all other instances, you just won't know. It will be a large project to research all of this information and it may happen one day.

For more recent players (2001 and later), it will be evident that a player drafted out of high school did not sign if he suddenly has college stats appearing in his record the following year. And if a player was drafted out of college and does not have any subsequent minor league stats, then it is a good indication that he either did not sign or became injured.

Other notes about the data

  • A player's position refers to his position at the time of the draft and does not reflect any position changes throughout his career. To see what positions he played, click on his name and view his fielding statistics or profile information.
  • High Schools and Universities are linked to their alumni pages on the site. You can see who else was drafted from this school. Not all high schools are linked as only the more popular schools have been included.
  • A player's name at the time of the draft may have changed during his playing career. (Joey Belle became Albert Belle). Some players may be listed with their given name while they now use their middle name.
  • Draft picks by team are available in the teams area of the web site.
  • Signing bonuses are not included as I do not have this information.
  • Round 1 of each regular draft has more picks than there are teams due to the inclusion of supplemental picks received for free agent losses the previous year or for not signing their previous year's first round pick.
